[nrp soundbites] A leader’s mindset

[2 July 2021] Day 32 of nrp* in Malaysia

Today, I take a small break on the topic of empowerment and talk about mindset. Leaders are responsible for their team’s performance. Sometimes, they are sent for formal training and sometimes they rely on on-the-job experience (aka shoot, then aim). Why are some more successful than others as leaders? The biggest contributor to this difference is mindset.

Here are a few elements to develop your mindset:

  1. Self-Talk.
The most important conversation we have is actually with ourselves. We talk to ourselves more often than you think – we do it all day, everyday. And each time, we add to our individual self-concept. Be mindful what you say to yourself. Plant seeds of positivity. Inspire yourself.
  2. Set Goals, not wishes.
Your goals sets the direction to which you will steer your personal and professional success. It acts as your road map. Needless to say, use SMART Goal Settings.
    S: Specific
    M: Measurable
    A: Achievable
    R: Relevant
    T: Time-bound

You cannot control the outcome of a wish, but you can control the outcome of a goal.” – Tom Corley.
  3. Grit.
Psychologist, Angela Duckworth says that “Talent counts, but effort counts twice.” How often do we keep our New Year’s resolutions? Setting goals is one thing. Focusing and keeping to your path towards it, over long periods of time is what we need to achieve it. Sometimes, we need that pure grit to push us past the desire to give up.

All this may sound overwhelming. The best strategy is to break it down to chunks. Set milestones along the way.

We’ll be seeing you the top of the mountain one day.
