WOTW #6: transliterate

transliterate means to represent or spell characters in another alphabet

‘Transliterate’ is not to be confused with ‘translate’.  It also does not mean literal translation.

Transliterate works on the syllable – the sound of the word – and converts it into a different alphabet.

Hanyu Pinyin is one of the most-used transliteration system in the world. It is used to transliterate the Mandarin (Chinese) words into the Roman alphabets.
