Carrot, not stick

Graphic showing an angry boss shouting through the bullhorn at a staff member

I was watching a show on TV last week.

The CEO walked in and announced to everyone (I paraphrase):

“Listen, everyone! We have been rated 2nd in the Top Merchant Bank list. If we continue to be No. 2 next year, everybody here will be looking for a new job.”

I get it! All CEOs want to be No. 1. This is expected in the cut-throat world of merchant banking —it’s, after all, a rat-race out there. No wonder so many are so stressed and demotivated.

She would have been more effective if she had put it this way:

“Next year, if we rank first, all of us will be rewarded big-time!”

It’s the same message, but it’s presented in a positive tone. Even better, announce the bonus payouts in exact terms.

TELL THEM WHAT YOU WANT. DON’T TELL THEM WHAT YOU DON’T WANT.

CARROT, NOT STICK.
